Site Description and Habitats The majority of the 170,000 acre (64,000 acres in Tennessee) complex is forested. Restoration efforts to bring back oak savannas is being done by LBL staff. 300 miles of undeveloped shoreline along Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley provide views of large expanses of open water. Nearly 200 miles of hiking trails are available for day and overnight trips. Bird species of interest: Spring and Fall Migration: Warblers, vireos, thrushes, and tanagers can be abundant. Blackpolland Tennessee Warblers can be common to abundant, along with Acadian Flycatchersand Eastern Wood-pewees. Swainson's Thrushes can be common spring and fall migrants. Cerulean Warblers and Golden-winged Warblers may be found. Summer: Expected summer birds include Acadian Flycatcher, Red-eyed Vireo, Yellow-throated Vireo, Kentucky and Hooded Warbler, Northern Parula, American Redstart, and Summer and Scarlet Tanager. Winter: At lake access areas, look for waterfowl, loons, and gulls. Expected species include Ring-billed Gull, Bonaparte's Gull, Herring Gull, Mallard, Gadwall, Canvasback, Redhead, Red-breastedand Hooded Merganser, and Common Loon.
